Is it worth it to go into Direct Selling just for the tax write off?
I’m thinking of doing Avon or some other direct selling or mlm just for the tax write off. Do you think it is worth it?
You NEVER get into a business just for the “write-off.” Please remember that the write-off means you get to take a deduction for the money you lost. If you assume that your tax rate, between federal and state, is about 25%, then for every $100 you spent you will get back $25 in tax relief. You’ve still spent the $100, so you’ve actually lost $75 of real money.
If you have a passion to sell, and you believe in your products, then by all means get into the business. There are some nice tax advantages, since you can deduct some expenses that might not ordinarily be deductible. However, you must have a profit motive, because the deductions don’t outweigh the extra expenses you incur.
